In July, the School Committee, members of the leadership team, and representatives from the DTA and DESPA came together to help develop the School Committee’s value and belief statements. We prioritized the following areas: academic excellence, social and emotional well-being, professional culture, family and community engagement, operations, and fiscal responsibility.
Through our work, we developed value and belief statements for each of these focus areas, along with action steps to guide progress toward our objectives. Over the course of the school year, we will concentrate on many of these steps to help move the district forward and ensure student success. While these action items will take more than a year to fully accomplish, they will serve as a roadmap for our ongoing work.
I am grateful to the members of the School Committee, the leadership team, and our educators who dedicated time during the summer to participate in this effort. It was a thoughtful, engaging, and collaborative process that reflects our shared commitment to the success of every student.

Hello, Students and Parents/Guardians!
We are pleased to present our “Required (and Suggested) Reading Titles and Assignments”. All students enrolled in honors and AP level English courses for the 2025-2026 school year are required to complete specific summer reading assignments for those classes. Students enrolled in college level classes may complete an optional assignment for extra credit if they choose to do so.
For students enrolled in Honors and AP English courses: the summer reading assignment is mandatory. In addition to reading the required books/readings, students in each course will be assigned specific assignments for each text (please see links on the “Required (and Suggested) Reading Titles and Assignments” doc as well as on the school website). This summer reading literature will be used in the fall and will be the basis for class discussions and the first assignments of the school year, including but not limited to projects, essays, tests, etc. The summer reading assignments will be counted as quiz grades, and the rubrics for grading these assignments are included on each assignment doc.
For students enrolled in college level courses: the summer reading assignment is optional. Students may choose an appropriate grade level book OR one from the recommended reading list for their grade. They will then choose ONE assignment from the “Summer Reading Extra Credit Choice Board” to complete. This assignment will be turned in to their English teacher during the first week of school and will be counted as an extra credit quiz grade. The rubrics for the optional assignments are printed on each assignment doc.
The “Required (and Suggested) Reading Titles and Assignments” doc along with all of the individual course summer reading assignments will also be posted on our high school website (www.douglasps.net). Please feel free to check with any English teacher if there are questions. Happy reading!
Sincerely,
The Douglas High School English Department:
Mrs. Mayo, Mrs. Costa, Mrs. Petrelli, and
Miss Woodford
